Westside

If urban downtown living suits your personality, then Take a Look at the Westside!
The hills above the Westside – much of which is called Bel Air Knolls – have views across the city toward the Riviera, even over the Pacific Ocean. As one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in town, six out of 10 houses were built prior to 1940.

With the coming of the railroad, Santa Barbara’s isolation ended and its reputation as a health resort began to grow. The Potter Hotel, located near the ocean in the 1920s, was once a playground for the rich and famous.

The Westside remains today as the most affordable neighborhood in town attracting young and old alike who wish to make Santa Barbara their home.

Would you like to find out which homes are for sale in the Westside? If so, we’ve got the tools for you to easily do this. Use the latest Google mapping tool to display all Westside houses and condos, both ACTIVE and SOLD side-by-side.

Homes for Sale in THE Westside

People are realizing that Westside is one of Santa Barbara’s most affordable neighborhoods and a world-class destination! Find out how you can profit from its popularity.

The Westside Story: History of Westside

As California became a state in 1850, the Westside was mainly grazing land with a marshy area near the ocean. Soon after statehood, streets were laid out by the Common Council in a square grid with names commemorating battles, heroes and historical figures. Soon five-acre (one square block) farms made up the area.

The 1860s brought new white settlers to Santa Barbara resulting in Westside becoming the first Anglo neighborhood in the area.

Major land owners made their marks. Judge Albert Packard built a large mansion for himself on West Canon Perdido and in 1861 constructed the largest adobe in California to house a winery. Producing more than 80,000 gallons per year, he marketed his wines all over the world.

The most glamorous phase of Westside history would be from 1910 to 1921 when Santa Barbara was the movie making capital of the world. Westerns were shot around town beginning in 1910. In 1913 ground was broken on The Flying-A, the largest movie studio in the world at Mission and Chapala. Only a small dressing room/rehearsal hall at the corner of Mission and Chapala remains of Santa Barbara’s “golden age of movies” although there is one reminder of the silent screen era – the 2000-seat Fox Arlington Theater built in 1928, the year before “talkies” took over the big screen.

PARKS AND PLACES OF INTEREST

Fernald Mansion / Trussell-Winchester Adobe
The two “can’t miss” places to see in Westside are two historical structures, the Fernald Mansion and its neighbor next door, the Trussel-Winchester Adobe.

The Fernald Manion is a 14-room Queen Anne-style Victorian mansion built in 1862. And the Trussel-Winchester Adobe is a typical adobe from 1854. It was built by Maine sea Captain Horatio Gates Trussell in 1854 from adobe bricks and timbers salvaged from the steamship, Winfield Scott, which wrecked on a nearby coast in December 1853.

Elings Park: One of the Largest Sports Parks in the U.S.
On the Westside is one of the largest sports parks in the United States.
