History of Goleta

Six thousand-year-old Native American village remains have been excavated near the Airport making Goleta one of the oldest historical sites in Santa Barbara. Paradoxically, it is one of the youngest residential districts having been incorporated in 2002.

In the old days The Turnpike Stage Road ended near present day San Marcos High School. The toll road was used for getting over San Marcos Pass into the Santa Ynez valley for those traveling north toward Santa Maria and on to San Francisco.
