History of Foothills
According to the San Marcos Foothills Coalition, the area was established by the Chumash Indians more than
eight thousand years ago. "Archaeological research and artifacts indicate that sites on the San Marcos Foothills
property were occupied over 1500 years ago. Artifacts associated with food processing and tool creation have been
found on the San Marcos Foothills, indicating the location of Indian campground sites."
By 1852, the Foothills were declared public land by the U.S. government making it open to homesteading and/or purchase.
Once the site of many old-style ranches, the Foothills now offers acre-view lots with incredible scenic views of the mountains
as well as the city.
